Welcome to SAN MARINO
an extra service of European City Guide / ECG

Information about SAN MARINO The third smallest state in Europe also claims to be the world's oldest republic. The Sammarinese say that their tiny country began life back in the third or fourth century AD. Nestling among the Apennines of North West Italy, San Marino originally relied on a subsistence economy. However the sheep and vineyards were ditched and the city reinvented itself as a prime tourist destination. The Basilica del Santo is the heart and spirit of both the city and the republic and contains the bones of San Marino himself. Many events smell of frankincense and myrrh as the largely Catholic population celebrate their many holy days. Religion devotion, however, does not preclude festivities of all kinds, something the San Marinese are rather partial to, particularly if it involves a crossbow and arrow. The tourist sector contributes over 50% of income. While not a member of the European Union, the republic has been an integral part of the European Communities since the 1950s.
